Simulation of Synthetic Complex Data: The R Package simPop

Matthias Templ, Bernhard Meindl, Alexander Kowarik, Olivier Dupriez — Journal of Statistical Software

Abstract

This peer-reviewed software paper documents simPop, the R package for simulating synthetic complex population and household data. It implements a model-based framework that combines calibrated resampling of structural variables with simulation of the remaining characteristics, reproducing the joint distributions, hierarchical household structure, and known population margins of the source data. The paper shows how simPop scales to large, complex populations for microsimulation and safe data release. Published in the Journal of Statistical Software and developed in cooperation with the World Bank, it is the standard citable reference for simPop and a cornerstone of synthetic-population generation in official statistics.
