Abstract
This early paper reports on developing statistical disclosure control software in R, at a time when few open, reproducible tools for anonymising microdata existed. It motivates the case for a free, script-based environment in which risk estimation and protection methods can be combined transparently and re-run on new data. The ideas and prototype described here grew into the sdcMicro package. Presented at Privacy in Statistical Databases, it marks the starting point of a line of open-source SDC tooling that the author has maintained ever since.
