Data Anonymization Workshop at useR! 2024 in Salzburg

The Swiss Data Anonymization Competence Center delivered a three-hour workshop titled “Data Anonymization for Open Science” at the useR! 2024 conference held in Salzburg. Oscar Thees and Jiri Novak facilitated the session.

The workshop covered a general methodological overview and best practices for anonymizing data, alongside techniques for balancing privacy protection with data usability. The instructors examined three primary approaches — non-perturbation, perturbation, and synthetic methods — while addressing practical implementations and the intersection of ethical obligations with regulatory requirements.

Workshop materials are publicly available, including presentation slides and supplementary code hosted on GitHub, enabling broader access to the content.
